Standard, Museum, Gallery Wrap Canvas

A canvas is usually wrapped in accordance with your aesthetic objectives. Three basic methods are standard, museum and gallery wrap. With the standard wrap method, the image is painted only on the front of the fabric with none of it overlapping the sides. The staples are visible on the sides, so it's best to frame this type of painting. With a museum wrap, the image is once again painted entirely on the front of the fabric, but the staples are on the back and not visible from the front. Artists often paint the sides of this type of canvas with a coordinating color. A gallery wrap canvas features an image that extends past the front of the surface and to the back edge of the sides. The staples are on the back and aren't visible from the front. For both museum and gallery wraps, a frame is not required, as the canvas can hang alone on a wall and retain its aesthetic appeal.
